dead. suspect two is on the run. we have an mbta officer who was seriously wounded and is in surgery right now. we have an m.i.t. security officer who has been killed. there is a massive manhunt under way. a lot of law enforcement involved in that. to something that, we have suspended all service on the mbta our public transit service until we think it's safe to open all or some of that. we're asking people to shelter in place. in other words, to stay indoors with their doors locked and not to open the door for anyone other than a properly identified law enforcement officer and that applies here in watertown where we are right now. also, cambridge, waltham, newton, belmont, and at this

point all of boston. all of boston. this is a serious situation. we're taking it seriously. we're asking the public to take it seriously, as well. and with this law enforcement, by following those simple instructions, we have every asset that we can possibly muster on the ground right now. they are doing a terrific job and working in concert with each other, but we are going to need the public to help us help them stay safe. where are you, commissioner? >> right behind you. thank you, governor. as the governor said, this is a rapidly developing situation. within the last half hour, we received information that i have communicated to mayor menino the mayor asked me to come here and to tell you that the shelter in place recommendation has tended throughout the of boston. there's a lot of information coming in. we're working very closely with federal authorities in washington. we are examining all databases,

all potential leads and there are officers that are moving around the city right now. please be patient with us. work with us. if you see anything suspicious, let us know. we are trying to make this safe as quickly as possible but this is an ongoing situation, i want to stress that. this is an ongoing situation. >> colonel timothy alvin. first, i want to start by saying thank you to each and every one of you. you've gotten the message out there to the neighborhood. i have to ask you to continue to do that. our number one priority right now is with these neighborhoods here in watertown and making them safe and finding this individual. that's what we're committed to. we need more time. we're making significant progress up there. but it may take hours to do this. so please bear with us. i know that there's a lot of questions and we'll have plenty of time to address those after this. but for right now, this is about public safety, this is about the watertown neighborhood so please give us that leeway.

police go door to door trying to find the surviving suspect. cbs reporter susan mcginnis has been following the overnight developments in the boston area. that suspect was killed early this morning in a shootout with police. here's susan mcginnis with more. reporter: explosions and gunshots pierced the early- morning hours as police closed ine su othects if the boston marathon bombings. officers are going door to looking for one of the men who they say opened fire on them early this morning. >> we are asking you to stay indoors, to stay in your homes, for the time being. >> reporter: police say this man, the man identified as suspect number 2 in the boston marathon bombings, is still on the loose. >> we believe this to be a terrorist. we believe this to be a man who has come here to kill people. >> reporter: suspect number one the man in the black hat is now

reportedly dead from multiple gunshot wounds and possibly even blast wounds. >> an officer has been shot. >> reporter: the events began late thursday night when two men allegedly shot and killed a police officer at m.i.t. they then reportedly stole a car at gunpoint and headed to watertown. that's where police caught up with them and a gunpoint ensued. the suspects reportedly used other weapons against the cops during the chase. >> during the course of that pursuit, several explosive devices were discharged from the car at the police officers. >> reporter: a transportation police officer was hit during the gunpoint and is at the hospital in critical condition. susan mcginnis, cbs news, boston. 5:08. the martinez boy who was wounded in the boston bombings could get out of the intensive care unit today. 11-year-old aaron hern had a visit from first lady michelle obama yesterday. here's a picture. she gave him a stuffed toy and e 6tther is now resident. recovering from severe shrapnel wounds to his leg.

not clear how much longer he will be in the hospital, but he is on the mend. yesterday's "new york post" cover showed two people that the publication said the fbi was looking for in connection with the boston marathon bombings. it turns out those men were innocent. 17-year-old [ non-english language ] of massachusetts learned about the cover online. he and his friend went to talk to the police and were later cleared but the man a track star is worried he will never recover from the implication. >> people lost family, [ indiscernible ] all the blame is going to be on me for -- i can tell you, it wasn't me. >> he said he is worried it will have an impact on his college applications. the post has updated its story online reporting the two men have been cleared by investigators. but they didn't add any

few minutes after 5:00 in the morning. here are the numbers. friday morning 49 concord, 53 oakland, san jose 51. 45 in santa rosa. high clouds coming not northern part of the state. that's a little low pressure trough that's going to give rain in parts of the washington and oregon. for us, the rain will end around eureka and we'll look at another pleasant day today. we'll be cooler at the coastline as we get low clouds moving in but inland numbers could come up a degree or two. 81 at fairfield and 82 degrees at concord. 61 pacifica. 65 in the city today. oakland 72. boy, we continue warm inland even temperatures remain moderate along the shoreline. bay today mid-70s. looks nice -- i don't know temperature that's true of traffic. let's find out. here's elizabeth. it just gotting you will i in vacaville. we are dealing with a serious accident. a car is wedged under a logging truck.

so likely injuries involved. it was just reported a couple of minutes ago. we are still gathering more details. the latest location is westbound 80 approaching meridien road. so again, expect some delays westbound if you are heading into vacaville right now. emergency crews by the way are heading to the scene. also, here's a live for the silicon valley ride. 880/237 in the clear. no delay towards sunnyvale. westbound 580 in the last few minutes or so we have just begun to see a few brake lights coming out of the altamont pass. but so far this commute is a huge improvement over yesterday. this was our hotspot for sure after that one accident in pleasanton. we saw delays up to two hours yesterday morning. everything is normal this morning. so far your drive time for the east bay looks pretty good if you are traveling up the nimitz or down the eastshore freeway. westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze a 19-minute commute. so far by the way bart off to a nice start. everything on time. that's a check of traffic.

massachusetts that left a pe officer dead... as well as a suspect in the back now to this morning's big breaking story. a wild night in massachusetts that left a police officer dead as well as a suspect in the boston marathon bombings. for the latest, let's go to anne makovec in the newsroom. >> reporter: good morning. we are watching a lot of information pour into the newsroom this morning. the man who was killed overnight is identified as a 19- year-old from cambridge, massachusetts. a russian man whom police say carried out the boston bombing attack with his brother, who is still on the loose right now. the latest photo of the man who is still at large came from a convenience store in cambridge. police say he tried to rob the store. his name is [ indiscernible ] tsarnaev. the man in the white hat in the picture is the one who is the subject right now of a large- scale manhunt.

the man on the left is thone who has been killed. the suspect was lled early this morning in a shootout with police. that happened in the suburb of watertown. that confrontation started around 10:00 last night boston time when police say one of the suspec killed a police officer on the m.i.t. campus and then staged a carjacking. police say the suspect threw explosives from their car as they led police on to a chase into watertown. this happened hours after the fbi released photos of the suspects. people in at least 7 boston neighborhoods are on lockdown. >> reporter: he may be holed up somewhere. i think it's a pretty good bet he is not going anywhere by way of public transportation, buses, trains or otherwise, because list picture is the most famous -- because his picture now is the most famous picture in the world. >> reporter: at least a quarter million people in the boston suburbs are told to stay home. all mass transit is shut down.

businesses are being asked not to open today in watertown. the two suspects are identified by the "associated press" as coming from the russian region near chechnya. but they have lived in the u.s. for at least a year. that is the latest. we'll continue to follow it all morning long. michelle, back to yo. >> we'll have another live report from boston ngup. let's check traffic on this friday. >> good morning. unfortunately we have a couple of different accidents going on right now. one up in vacaville. westbound 80 approaching meridien. we heard initially that a car was wedged underneath a logging truck. looks like that's no longer the case. there are injuries reported though emergency crews are on scene so we know at least one lane is blocked. chp out there as well westbound 80 approaching meridien right before that exit that the accident is blocking one lane. now we are getting word of a new injury crash. a truck sounds like a box truck ran off the roadway. northbound 101 approaching bailey avenue so all those

commuters heading out from morgan hill, south san jose, just a heads up sounds like lanes are blocked there and emergency crews once again heading to the scene, because again possible injuries. two different accidents we're watching. let's go outside show you some live traffic cameras. there is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza where so far things are moving well getting into san francisco. approaching the dublin interchange, a hotspot yesterday we had an accident that jammed up the morning commute into pleasanton. but so far, while things are getting busy, everything is still about a 15-minute drive time out of the altamont pass and heading into dublin. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." for the latest on our gorgeous weather forecast, here's brian. it is going to be gorgeous. good morning, starting with mostly clear skies, chilly. it will be a tton the warm side later in the day. we are beginning with numbers near 50 degrees around the bay and in the mid-40s inland. and this afternoon we'll take it into the low 80s inland am a

few low clouds possible along the shoreline so maybe cooler along the coast but a little bit warmer inland. bay in between about the same. high pressure holding over the eastern pacific even as that little batch of low pressure over the pacific northwest triggers showers up north. clouds from that this afternoon. out of the bay area, sfo okay this morning. mostly clear, no delays reported. highs in the mid-60s. and the low tonight of 49 degrees a little rain in chicago. and new york drizzle here and there and 77 degrees. 70 at houston. denver at 59. pinpoint forecast bay area looks like 80 in santa clara today. down 101 at morgan hill, 82 degrees. san jose at 81. and 73 right on top of the hayward fault. 82 at antioch. 82 brentwood. 81 degrees at napa. 81 dublin, 82 pleasanton. bodega bay and stinson beach might have clouds but still pleasant mid-70s for the north bay. in the look ahead, we are still keeping it warm through next

more than 200,000 honda minivans and suvs are being recalled in the united states and canada due to a transmission problem. the recall includes the honda crv small suv and the odyssey minivan for 2012 and 2013. also, the 2013 acura rdx suv

and so far, honda says there have been no reports of crashes or injuries due to the problem. the sharks are now playing for home ice advantage in the upcoming stanley cup play-offs. and looking good. in san jose last night, 27 saves against the wild. couture with a couple of assists and goals as the sharks routed minnesota by a final 6- 1. it was san jose's biggest offensive game of the season. they are picking up at the right time. they are currently in the number 5 position in the western conference. rough game for giants pitcher matt cain in milwaukee yesterday. he gave up a homer in the another in trdhiincluding e by milwaukee brewers pitcher of all guys. giants have lost all four games that cain started this year and they are glad to get out of milwaukee. they lost 7-2. giants start a home stand against the padres tonight at at&t. 5:25. we are staying on top of the

we'll ke you up back here at home, 5:32, aaron hern's mother says her son has taken a big step forward in his recovery. he is out in a boston hospital. 11-year-old from martinez could be out of intensive care today. first lady michelle obama gave him a stuffed toy and medal from president obama yesterday. the 6th grader's leg badly injured in monday's marathon bombings. even those who made it out of the boston blast zone unhurt will always carry the scarf what they saw that day especially those who ran towards the danger to help. tracy monroe recalls kneeling down next to a little girl whose leg had been blown off. >> i tried to hold on to her hand and just rub her face and i said, hi, baby. look up at me. look in my eyes. come on, come on, just -- it's going to be okay. what's your name? what's your name? and she just looked up at me

and said, "jane." i'll never forget it. >> that little girl jane is now recovering but monroe later learned the little girl was the sister of the young boy, 8-year- old martin richard, who died in the attacks. meanwhile, in texas, there are newly released images of the deadly explosion at a fertilizer plant. [ explosion ] >> huge flames co the stanceprior to that the hpey night. this video here was shot by a college student who was not injured. the explosion at a farm town of west, texas, demolished dozens of homes and buildings. it's still not clear how many people were killed in the small community of 2800. early estimates put the number of dead at high as 15. then authorities backed away from those numbers. but just last night, west mayor tommy muska estimated 35 to 40 people were killed. more than 160 people have been treated for injuries. destruction can be seen for

several blocks around the explosion site. >> friends have had their whole houses destroyed. and i just -- we are going to try to pull together and recover from this. i mean, that's all we can do. >> rescuers continue to search the rubble of houses and apartments near that explosion site hanging on to hope that survivors can be found. investigators say it appears to be the result of an industrial accident. meanwhile, music legend willie nelson announced yesterday his upcoming 80th birthday concert in austin will be a benefit show for victims of the explosion. a vigil was held at a church in west last night to honor the victims. there is one man who is an eyewitness to both tragedies. a runner from austin, joe birdie, crossed the finish line about 30 seconds before the first bomb went off in boston. his wife was hit by shrapnel but she is okay. now two days later he is back home in texas when of course the explosion happened. the explosion sowerful it shook his car. he wasn't hurt. he says thou it is a miracle he is doing okay.

how about that. >> no kidding. a lot going on in the last few days. >> a crazy week. >> yes. so back to the bay area, a lot going on here because the weather is gorgeous. >> you were in the snow, what, yesterday in denver? now 80 degrees. >> in the snow and i'm loving this california weather. >> that's a microclimate. that's a macro climate actually. no snow here, plenty of sun. things warming up into the low 80s inland even as it's cool at the shoreline perhaps not by denver standards. santa rosa 45. fairfield brisk 44 for mid- april. we are looking at some high clouds spilling in over the top of fairly robust high pressure but those high clouds should be visible later in the day today as this begins to move from north to south under the influence of a low pressure trough. it will bring rain to washington and to oregon into the far reaches of northern california. but for us, all it will do is perhaps give a push the

marine layer and that's why it will cool a little bit by the coast today. but still remain warm inland. yesterday san francisco had 70. to 65. ecool that out 5 gree everybody else inland comes up 5 degrees. so nice warm day and the extended forecast coming up in a minute but first let's get the latest on the road ahead. here's elizabeth. >> thank you, brian. out in hayward right now, we have what sounds like a pretty serious injury crash. it's involving a pedestrian. so a car hit a pedestrian just a little while ago at mission boulevard and cherry way. we know an ambulance is on scene as well as chp. so we have been gathering some more details but again, expect some delays especially along mission boulevard for the meantime in hayward. so this accident we have also been watching in vacaville also injuries reported. they have issued a traffic alert now on westbound 80 approaching meridien road so a car got wedged underneath one of those large logging trucks. we understand the person was able to get out. hopefully they are okay but

again the car is still wedged under the truck so emergency crews are still on scene. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> all right, elizabeth. thank you so much. back to our breaking news from massachusetts. the death of one suspect in the boston marathon bombings and now the search for another. cbs reporter susan mcginnis is in boston. she has the very latest for us now. susan, must be very strange in boston. i guess there's a "shelter in place" in surrounding cities including boston. is there anyone on the streets there right now? >> reporter: yeah. the latest here is that there is this massive manhunt going on near here. this is in the town of watertown, massachusetts. all every boston is on high alert -- all of boston is on high alert. it's back to fear and people here are just, uhm, they're back on edge today. so this manhunt is going on in watertown right now. police, s.w.a.t., national guard are knocking on doors combing the area trying to find

this one surviving suspect. the fir suspect was killed by -- the first suspect was killed by police in a massive firefight including explosives being thrown. he died with explosive wounds on him including gunshots. and now this hunt for the second brother 19-year-old from chechnya who is now on the run and this is who police are trying to find now. the governor here telling all of boston and all of the surrounding areas that are being searched to stay indoors, stay inside for their safety. all of mass transit has been shut down. even amtrak has shut down its service between here and providence. >> they are taking this massive manhunt and the situation very seriously. as you can see they want everyone to be safe. susan, you were talking about last night's violence. how were the police able to link those two suspects with the violence last night to the boston marathon bombings that happened earlier this is week? >> re: well, it was a the fbi reedos erything got ed

yesterday and the videos of the suspects at the marathon finish line. we saw suspect 2 with the backwards white cap. this is the man they are looking for now. five hours later there was a disturbance at m.i.t. and a policeman went toward the disturbance to see what happened and he was shot and killed. after that there was apparently a robbery at a 7-eleven by the suspect and a carjacking by the two men who ended up keeping the carjacking victim for a half hour before releasing that person unharmed. then they drove to watertown and that's where the ensuing firefight took place. that's where suspect 1 was killed and then suspect 2 remains on the loose. >> all right. susan mcginnis in boston, thank you for the very latest. >> reporter: thank you. and you can take a closer look at the suspects' pictures. get more coverage on kpix 5 or kpix.com.

look forward to especially as regards warming temperatures along the shoreline. it's going to be warmtoday, too. it'shat's in thather headlines as we look over the f morning. now, mostly clear start. it will be sunny and warmer inland. the coast will moderate in temperatures come down a little bit maybe a few low clouds but it will stay dry this weekend and all the way into next week as high pressure remains in control of the eastern pacific. so that will hold on even as that little low moves into the pacific northwest and brings them rain. for us, it just means the marine layer gets a little enforcement and maybe a few low clouds along the shore. so we'll stay dry no rain in sight. and the numbers today reflect that inland the great valley 82 in sacramento, 83 in fresno. 71 if you are headed to yosemite. but the north costa rica reasoning 55 degrees and drizzle and for us, the numbers today stay in the mid-70s down in the south bay, a few low 80s, too. 79 in sunnyvale, home of apple computer, 80 cupertino. 82 morgan hill. san jose today 81 degrees.

castro valley that they have confirmed that an alameda sheriff patrol car was involved in this accident. so again mission boulevard shut down between blossom way and medford avenue, at least one person killed in the accident involving a pedestrian. this is also a traffic alert we're watching. this is up in vacaville. westbound 80 approaching meridien road. one lane is blocked. a car was wedged underneath a logging truck and so the person was able to get out okay. earlier injuries were reported but the car is still under the truck. emergency crews are blocking at least one lane. we are beginning to see some delays now in the westbound direction heading into vacaville. those are our two hot spots out there right now. otherwise, things are quiet around the bay area. here's a live look at the bay bridge. just your usual commute right now getting into san cino meter westbound 58tingaro get busys y

is still at large came from a convenience store in came. his name is dzhokhar tsarnaev. he is 19 years old and police call him a terrorist armed and dangerous. he is also the man seen in this picture in white hat there. the subject now of a e- scale manhunt. e on the left isthe one who has been killed. the suspect killed early this morning in a shootout with police that happened inth boston suburb watertown. that confrontation started at around 10:00 last night boston time when police say one of the suspects killed a police officer on the m.i.t. campus. then staged a carjacking. police say the suspects were throwing explosives from their car as they led police on a chase into watertown hours after the fbi released these photos of the two suspects. right now, people in at least 7 boston area neighborhoods are on lockdown. cbs correspondent bob orr said earlier in a special report

that the investigation will be exploring possibly terrorist connections overseas. >> with a name, the fbi will be able to run that through a number of channels looking at all the usual suspects. they come from an area that, frankly, has had a lot of experience with various terror groups and the chechnian region has been notorious for years as you know, charlie. so i think there's a lot of potential suspects here and there's a chance this could get a lot bigger in terms of planning, conspirators and plot. >> reporter: a quarter of a million people living in the suburbs of boston are told to stay home right now. all mass transit in boston is shut down and businesses are being asked not to open today. now, we are getting a few different reports of how old these guys were and how long they have been in the u.s. but the men's uncle told the "associated press" this morning that the brothers lived getherear boston and have been in the united states for

about a decade. they traveled here togeth om the russian region near chechnya. that's what we have right now here in the newsroom. i'm anne makovec. back to you. >> thank you, anne. we are going to -- our sister station in boston, wbz. let's listen in. >> as more and more police arrived especially fbi agents, many of them carrying long guns and making their way down norfolk street fairly quiet residential neighborhood with several businesses mixed in, neighbors say it's kind of one of those urban hipster type of neighborhoods that's filled with plenty of younger and older people, families, as well. it is diverse. there's also a large brazilian and portugese community here according to neighbors. so they say the suspect would have fit in very well and most of the neighbors here on norfolk street don't even really know who he is. they are being evacuated from their homes on norfolk street at this point over the last 45 minutes or so. we've seen these people being brought out of their homes.

many of them are families. they have had babies with them. they have had their pets and being told by police to leave their neighborhood at this point. we also did speak to a young lady named deanna. she sa she went to sc zhok dr tsarnaev at cambridge sc. e said he had friends, a wrestler, quie pretty much nondescript. she has no idea where he would have gotten this interest in harming people. she said he was a nice kid. the said they lost touch after graduation a couple of years ago. she knew his sister, as well. she thinks that he was born here. she is not sure exactly but she says he didn't really have an accent so she always thought he was born here. just kind of one of the guys. so nothing that would have given her any thought that it would have come to this at this

point. >> they continue to evacuate neighbors. they have taken to people into custody for questioning. >> michael rosenfield in cambridge. this picture is very haunting picture. described by people who knew him as a nice kid. if we get a picture of him, its unnerving to see him looking like your typical unassuming teenager. we also have this new ur here on the right of dkhokhar who all eyes of the nation are looking for him at this point considered armed and dangerous. a terrorist who police say is intent on killing with explosives.
